Camping at Fort Churchill

Over Labor Day weekend we decided to go camping at Fort Churchill, here in Nevada. This was the first opportunity we've had to go camping this summer and the first time we were able to take out our trailer which we finally finished "remodeling."

Here's a shot of the sunset Friday night

For you history buffs, Fort Churchill was built in the 1860's out of fear of the Indians. It was built along the Carson River and guarded the Pony Express mail route and was used as an important supply depot during the Civil War. It was abandoned in 1869. Not much is left of it, and what is left are ruins.

We were told it was a nice place to camp, close to home and right on the Carson River. This would be a good time to point out that camping in Nevada = barren hills, sage brush and wind. We figured it would be fun for Austin, as well as the dogs to go swimming in the river. We were quite disappointed at the "river," which was more like a pool of ankle-deep standing water. There also weren't very many people there, so Austin hated it. He wanted to play with other kids and there weren't any. The man in the camp site next to us did not leave his RV - ever. We got there Friday night and stayed til Sunday and the only time he emerged was Sunday morning when he had to empty his waste. We could hear his TV blaring all day.

Our trip proved to be very boring as it was so incredibly windy that we couldn't even leave the trailer. We did walk down to the "river" in the morning, but by 10am it was so windy we just sat inside. We left early on Sunday. So much for a 3-day weekend.

(notice how it's only ankle deep on the Chihuahua!)
